What to Expect with Patient Interaction
Your ability to engage with patients will depend on the clinical setting, background, and the comfort level of the medical professionals you're shadowing. You’ll never be asked to assume responsibilities outside your training or comfort zone.
Training and Experience Levels Vary
Interns come with different levels of experience. If you haven’t been trained in a specific clinical skill, like drawing blood, you won’t be expected to perform it. However, peers with certifications or relevant work experience, such as EMTs or phlebotomists, may be invited to assist more actively.
Hands-On Outreach and Education
In addition to clinical shadowing, some interns participate in hands-on community education, such as leading sessions on oral hygiene or handwashing for children. Every placement is unique, and the type of patient interaction you experience will reflect your skills and the setting’s needs.
