What Departments Will I Work In?

Interns rotate through departments like Emergency, Maternity, Surgery, and more. Longer stays allow for specialty placements by interest.

Our clinical shadowing experience with International Medical Aid is designed to expose you to a broad range of medical specialties, starting with the most dynamic and high-impact departments.

Most interns begin their rotation in the Emergency Department. This is typically the busiest area of the hospital, where interns can observe the front line of medical care. It offers exposure to various patient cases, acute conditions, and fast-paced clinical decision making. Starting here provides a strong foundation for understanding how admissions, triage, and urgent care unfold in real time.

Following your emergency medicine rotation, the second most common placement is in the Maternity Department. Depending on the facility and local guidelines, interns in this setting can observe prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. This rotation offers insight into women’s health and maternal care in resource-limited environments.

For students staying longer than two weeks, we offer the opportunity to rotate through additional departments aligned with your career goals and interests. These include:

  • Internal Medicine

  • Pediatrics

  • General Surgery

  • Orthopedics

  • Cardiology

  • Anesthesiology

  • Epidemiology

  • Tropical Medicine

  • And others, depending on availability and site-specific offerings

Assignments are coordinated based on your academic background, career focus, and program length. While rotations vary by hospital and country, we do our best to tailor your clinical exposure to your goals.

If you let us know your preferences during the application process, we’ll work with you to design a meaningful experience that aligns with your interests.
