What Types of Educational Experiences Can I Expect Beyond Shadowing?

IMA interns join daily lectures, clinical discussions, outreach clinics, and workshops for a complete global health education experience.

Written by Mark Jones

In addition to observing clinical care in hospitals and clinics, International Medical Aid (IMA) offers a well-rounded educational experience that prepares participants for future careers in healthcare. Our healthcare internship programs are designed to go beyond simple observation, combining structured learning, public health engagement, and cultural immersion.

Daily Lectures and Clinical Discussions

Each morning, interns participate in physician-led educational sessions covering key medical topics, case studies, and healthcare practices relevant to the region. These interactive lectures may include:

  • Tropical and infectious diseases

  • Diagnostic approaches in low-resource settings

  • Cultural considerations in patient care

  • Global health systems and policy

Interns are encouraged to ask questions and engage with the material. These sessions help students connect their observations to academic concepts and better understand the broader context of global medicine.

Simulation Exercises and Skills Workshops

Where permitted by hospital policy, interns may participate in simulation-based learning activities. These vary by site but may include:

  • Emergency response and triage simulations

  • Basic clinical skills demonstrations

  • Infection control training

  • Public health education role-playing

These workshops enhance clinical awareness and decision-making without violating ethical boundaries.

Afternoon Public Health and Hygiene Clinics

In the afternoons, interns participate in community health outreach. This includes mobile clinics, hygiene education sessions, and school-based programs. These initiatives offer safe, ethical, and meaningful hands-on learning.
