A typical day in International Medical Aid’s internship programs balance structured clinical exposure with cultural engagement and rest opportunities. While schedules vary by site and specialty, most participants follow a consistent daily rhythm throughout their program.
Hospital Rotations and Clinical Hours
Interns generally spend 6 to 8 hours daily in the hospital, working alongside physicians and medical teams. Mornings often include hospital rounds, department-specific observations, and physician-led educational sessions. Depending on the rotation, interns may observe in departments like Emergency Medicine, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, or Surgery.
Afternoons may involve continued hospital observation, time at mobile clinics, or participation in hygiene education programs coordinated by IMA’s community outreach team.
Interns also have the option to request one night shift per week, allowing them to experience how care is delivered during overnight hours. Shifts must be arranged in advance with your Program Mentor.
Afternoons and Local Activities
After clinical hours, interns often have free time to explore the local area. IMA residences are in safe neighborhoods near cultural landmarks, restaurants, and shops. Many interns use this time to relax, journal, study, or engage in local excursions organized by our in-country staff.
Weekends and Excursions
Weekends are open and flexible. Interns can choose to:
Join optional treks, safaris, or cultural tours
Continue observing in the hospital
Participate in additional outreach opportunities
Upon acceptance, your Program Mentor will help you build a customized schedule that aligns with your interests and academic goals. You can also view a Sample Program Schedule here.
