Physician Assistant and Pre-PA Internships

International Medical Aid Physician Assistant and Pre-Pa Internship Overview.

Written by Mark Jones

Overview

International Medical Aid (IMA) offers immersive Physician Assistant and Pre-PA internships abroad, enabling participants to gain first-hand clinical experience while working closely with physicians and healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics across the globe. Interns rotate through a variety of medical specialties—including internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, dermatology, and oncology—while observing procedures and participating in patient rounds.

The internship program was originally developed at Johns Hopkins University and blends hands-on experience with academic instruction. Interns benefit from a customized learning experience tailored to their academic path, personal interests, and career goals.

As a non-profit, IMA reinvests in the communities we serve. We offer a structured environment supported by local and U.S.-based resources and comprehensive training on safety and eye care best practices. You can learn more about the reasons to join IMA in our global health initiatives.

Physician Assistant Internship Philosophy

IMA’s Physician Assistant internship philosophy focuses on three pillars: clinical experience, cultural competency, and global health awareness. Each internship is structured to prepare participants for a meaningful healthcare career, emphasizing the value of cross-cultural understanding and international health systems.

Our Clinical Experience

Interns engage in structured clinical rotations and shadow experienced physicians, allowing them to practice critical clinical observation and learn procedural nuances in real-world settings. This foundation enhances both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Our Cultural Competency

Interns are immersed in the local culture through language exposure and day-to-day interaction with host communities. This cultural immersion helps interns understand the social factors influencing healthcare delivery and fosters empathy in patient care.

Our Global Health Competency

By collaborating with local healthcare partners and participating in outreach programs, interns gain insight into global health systems and the policy challenges in underserved regions. This experience strengthens their ability to address health disparities in a global context.

Mentorship and Support

IMA's experienced in-country and U.S.-based teams offer continual mentorship and support. Interns receive guidance on medical practices, cultural etiquette, and career preparation, ensuring a safe and meaningful experience throughout their stay.

Completion Certificate and Recommendation Letters

At the end of the program, interns receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation highlighting their clinical exposure, skills gained, and overall contributions. These materials can be valuable additions to graduate school or job applications.
