Can I Extend the Program Duration If I Choose a Two-Week Option?

IMA programs are rarely extendable after they begin. Apply for the full length up front to ensure availability and lower cost.

Many students inquire whether they can begin with a two-week internship and later extend their time abroad. While we understand the desire for flexibility, it is important to note that extensions are generally not available once the program has begun.

Why Extensions Are Rarely Offered

Our programs are often booked to full capacity months in advance. Interns are assigned to housing, clinical sites, and mentors as part of a highly structured system to provide the best possible experience. Because of this, extending a placement after arrival would disrupt the carefully arranged scheduling and resource allocation, ensuring quality and safety for all participants.

Additionally, extending your program requires changes in transportation, accommodations, clinical access, and staff assignments—all of which involve significant logistical and financial adjustments.

What to Know Before You Apply

If you’re considering a two-week program, we strongly recommend that you plan and commit to a longer duration if your schedule allows. Most pre-medical and pre-health students opt for four weeks or more, allowing for a broader experience across departments, deeper mentorship relationships, and greater involvement in community health initiatives.

In the rare event that a program extension is approved, the additional fees are significantly higher than the original weekly cost due to the short-notice nature of the request.

Before applying, speak with an IMA Program Advisor to determine the best duration for your academic and professional goals.
