What Are the Requirements to Participate in an IMA Program?

IMA accepts pre-health, medical, PA, nursing, and dental students committed to global health. See if you're a fit and how to apply.

Written by Mark Jones

International Medical Aid (IMA) welcomes applicants actively pursuing healthcare careers. This includes pre-health students and current students in medical, nursing, dental, physician assistant, and other allied health programs. Our programs are designed for individuals serious about building their clinical experience in global healthcare environments.

What Makes a Strong Candidate?

While we do not require prior international experience, our most successful interns typically meet the following criteria:

  • They are enrolled in or have completed relevant coursework in a health-related field

  • They have participated in physician shadowing, clinical volunteering, or similar healthcare exposure at home

  • They can clearly articulate their motivation for pursuing a healthcare career

Applicants should be mature, adaptable, and open to working in settings that differ significantly from U.S. or Western hospitals. We seek future healthcare professionals eager to learn and contribute meaningfully to underserved communities.

How to Apply

The competitive application process includes a personal statement, academic history, and a review of healthcare-related experiences. You can begin the process by visiting our Apply Today page.
