All IMA programs are open to high school students aged 15 and above.
High school students can apply to International Medical Aid (IMA) programs. All IMA internships are open to students aged 15 and older, including those currently in high school or recent high school graduates. These programs are designed to offer early exposure to healthcare through structured, hands-on experiences in international settings.
High school participants typically begin with observational roles, gaining insight into clinical settings, public health initiatives, and community outreach under the supervision of local healthcare professionals and IMA staff. Students receive orientation upon arrival, including basic medical language training (where applicable), cultural sensitivity workshops, and safety briefings to ensure they are prepared for the experience.
IMA places a strong emphasis on maturity, motivation, and the ability to contribute meaningfully within a cross-cultural healthcare environment. While no prior experience is required, applicants should be able to articulate why they are interested in the health professions and how they hope to benefit from the internship.
Families of high school interns can also expect robust support systems, including 24/7 U.S.-based emergency contact, in-country coordinators, and secure housing accommodations.
