International Medical Aid (IMA) provides Dentistry and Pre-Dentistry internships where students can work in bustling international healthcare environments, guided by our exceptional team of dedicated dentists and other healthcare professionals.
IMA focuses on improving the well-being of underserved individuals through community dental clinics and public health education programs. Dental care in developing countries is limited, and the absence of sanitation infrastructure and proper hygiene practices creates a significant demand for dental services in these areas.
Overview
Interns in the Dentistry or Pre-Dentistry Program will work alongside seasoned dentists and professionals in various countries. They will gain hands-on clinical experience in general dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, and pediatric dentistry. Interns will observe dental procedures, assist in patient care, and participate in community dental health programs.
Developed with insights from leading dental schools, this program integrates practical clinical experience with educational modules. Interns will enhance their understanding of dental practice, refine their clinical skills, and gain exposure to global dental health challenges. The program is tailored to each intern’s educational background and career aspirations, fostering personal and professional growth.
As a non-profit, IMA reinvests in the communities we serve. We offer a structured environment supported by local and U.S.-based resources and comprehensive training on safety and eye care best practices. You can learn more about the reasons to join IMA in our global health initiatives.
Dentistry Internship Program Philosophy
IMA’s dentistry internship program is built on three core principles: clinical experience, cultural competency, and global health competency. We believe that meaningful clinical exposure is critical to preparing for a successful dental career. In addition, understanding how different cultures and healthcare systems operate is key to becoming a compassionate and well-rounded dental professional.
We also emphasize the importance of global health literacy. A deeper understanding of international health systems and policy enables future dental practitioners to address disparities in oral health and improve outcomes for underserved populations.
Our Clinical Experience
Our dental internships are centered on hands-on learning. Interns assist and observe licensed dental professionals in clinical settings, gaining practical experience with oral exams, preventative care procedures, and common treatments. This exposure offers a strong foundation in both dental theory and clinical application.
Our Cultural Competency
We support cultural learning through immersive experiences. Interns engage in local customs, develop cross-cultural communication skills, and often study medical terminology in the local language. These interactions enhance understanding of how social and cultural factors influence dental care and patient attitudes.
Our Global Health Competency
Interns explore oral health within the broader framework of global healthcare systems. Through collaboration with local providers and participation in community-based initiatives, interns gain insight into oral health policy, challenges in resource-limited environments, and global efforts to expand access to dental care.
Our Mentorship and Support
Interns receive ongoing mentorship from both U.S.-based staff and in-country supervisors. From navigating dental-specific terminology to adjusting to local living conditions, our team is available throughout the program to provide guidance and ensure a successful experience.
Internship Certificates
After completing the program, interns receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation from International Medical Aid. These credentials reflect the skills, clinical exposure, and professional development gained during the internship and can strengthen applications to dental school or other advanced programs.
