International Medical Aid (IMA) takes the health and safety of our interns seriously, especially when it comes to minimizing and managing potential exposure to infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. While the risk of occupational exposure is low, it is still a critical consideration when participating in clinical programs in resource-limited settings.
IMA has a clearly defined post-exposure protocol in place at every program site. All interns receive orientation and training on proper hygiene, safety precautions, and procedures for reporting any incidents involving exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
In the event of a potential exposure, our on-site medical teams and U.S.-based staff respond immediately. We maintain 24-hour physician access and ensure that Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is administered quickly and effectively. PEP kits are available at all of our sites and are provided at no cost to interns. This is included as part of the program and does not require any additional fee.
Interns are never expected to cover the cost of emergency medical care related to clinical exposure. Our support structure is designed to prioritize both prevention and rapid intervention, giving interns and their families peace of mind.
