What if I Have Gaps in My Education? How Do I Explain What Happened?

If you’ve taken time away from school, be honest and highlight what you learned and how the experience made you stronger.

It’s okay to have gaps in your education—what matters is how you explain them. Whether it was a tough semester, a mental health break, or unexpected life events like COVID-related challenges, admissions committees want to understand your story, not penalize you.

The key is to reflect honestly and take ownership. If online learning didn’t work well for you, explain that and show how you’ve adapted or what you’ve done since. Highlight what you learned and how it’s made you more prepared for the challenges of medical school.

Keep it honest, constructive, and forward-looking. Medical schools value resilience and growth just as much as academic performance.
