What If I Don't Know What I Want to Specialize In?

It’s perfectly normal not to know your medical specialty yet—focus on your current interests and what draws you to medicine overall.

Written by Mark Jones

Most applicants don’t have their future medical specialty figured out. Even those who think they do often change paths during medical school. Admissions committees don’t expect you to have every detail mapped out.

If you have interests like working with underserved communities, doing global health work, or pursuing a dual MD/PhD, mention them. If not, focus your application on why you’re passionate about becoming a physician, what excites you about medicine, and what you’re eager to explore.

Curiosity, openness, and a genuine desire to serve go a long way. What matters most is your commitment to learning and growing in the field.
