Midwifery Internships

Gain hands-on midwifery experience abroad with IMA. Help underserved mothers while building clinical skills and global health insight.

Written by Mark Jones

IMA presents Midwifery Internships under the guidance of midwives, nurses, physicians, PAs, and other healthcare experts. We partner with a vast public and private healthcare facility network, enabling community health while gaining practical experience.

IMA is committed to improving the well-being of underserved populations in the regions we serve through medical clinics, public health education programs, first responder training, and first aid initiatives. We adopt a holistic approach to care, collaborating with local leaders to establish ethical and sustainable community-driven initiatives addressing the root causes of disease and illness.

Overview

Midwifery interns will collaborate with experienced midwives and obstetricians in hospitals and birthing centers worldwide. They will assist in different tasks such as:

  • Prenatal Care

  • Labor and Delivery

  • Postpartum Care for mothers and infants.

They will also observe and participate in patient education and community health programs. This program, developed in collaboration with top midwifery programs, combines hands-on clinical experience with educational modules. It will deepen their understanding of midwifery practices, enhance their clinical skills, and provide exposure to global maternal and child health issues. This program is customized to meet each intern's needs and goals, fostering personal and professional growth.

As a non-profit, IMA reinvests in the communities we serve. We offer a structured environment supported by local and U.S.-based resources and comprehensive training on safety and eye care best practices. You can learn more about the reasons to join IMA in our global health initiatives.

Midwifery Internship Program Philosophy

Delivering essential maternal health services to underserved communities, IMA’s Midwifery Internships allow participants to gain meaningful clinical experience while exploring vibrant cultures and landscapes across East Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. These programs are complemented by exclusive adventure excursions led by experienced and trusted local guides.

Rooted in integrity, respect, dedication, and innovation, our internships prioritize student safety, ethical practices, and sustainable impact. We partner with local leaders and healthcare providers to address systemic health challenges and improve outcomes for mothers and families in marginalized regions.

Clinical Experience That Builds Real-World Skills

Our internships emphasize hands-on learning. Interns participate in physician shadowing and clinical rotations, gaining direct exposure to prenatal care, labor and delivery support, and postpartum services. This experience builds a strong foundation in maternal and neonatal health practices.

Developing Cultural Competency Through Immersion

Interns participate in structured cultural immersion activities, which allow them to learn local languages, customs, and healthcare beliefs. This experience deepens their understanding of how culture influences maternal care and fosters skills necessary for respectful, patient-centered support.

Global Health Systems and Collaboration

Through partnerships with healthcare organizations abroad, interns gain insight into how maternal health systems function in other countries. Exposure to different models of care and public health policies broadens their understanding of international approaches to women’s health.

Mentorship and Ongoing Support

Our experienced staff provides continuous mentorship and logistical support. Whether preparing for clinic protocols or navigating local customs, interns receive guidance to ensure their professional and personal success throughout the program.

Certification and Documentation

Upon completion, interns receive a certificate of completion and a personalized letter of recommendation from IMA. These materials document the scope of clinical involvement and substantially add to any academic or professional portfolio.
