The frequently asked questions about Support Your Child and Next Steps under the Parent's Guide are here.
How can I support my child before and during the internship?
Encourage your child to set goals, stay flexible, and embrace the experience with an open mind. Stay in regular communication, but also allow them space to grow independently. Remind them that you're proud of their decision to step outside their comfort zone and explore a career in global health.
How do I stay in touch with my child while they're abroad?
IMA provides each intern with a local mobile phone SIM card to ensure reliable communication. Depending on internet availability, you can reach your child through the following:
WhatsApp
SMS
Email
Video Calls
Our U.S.-based support team is also available if urgent concerns arise.
Will this experience help with future applications?
Yes. Admissions committees consistently value global health experience, cultural competence, and initiative. Interns often use their time with IMA as the foundation for personal statements, recommendation letters, and graduate program interviews.
What happens after my child returns home?
Returning home from the experience may involve some adjustment. Encourage your child to reflect, stay in touch with peers and mentors, and look for ways to stay involved in healthcare, volunteering, or advocacy. Many interns go on to mentor future students or return to advanced programs.
Can I get involved as a parent?
Yes! Parents are welcome to support our scholarship fund, share their child's experience in their community, or advocate for global health education.
Can we speak with another parent or family whose child has completed the program?
Absolutely! We're proud of the strong relationships we've built with students and families, and we're happy to introduce you to a parent whose child has previously participated in the program. Just let us know, and we'll coordinate the introduction.
