Answers to the most frequently asked questions about program preparation and participation, designed to support you throughout your internship journey.

Program Schedule & Pre-Departure Information

How can I access my Program Schedule?

Your tentative Program Schedule is available digitally and can be accessed on your computer or mobile device. The schedule provides an overview of the clinical rotations you will complete during your internship in Cusco, Peru. Any updates or changes will be automatically reflected in your digital itinerary.

What information is included in the Program Schedule?

The schedule outlines your planned clinical rotations and gives a preview of what you will experience during the program. Additional details and guidance will be provided as you begin your internship.

Will my schedule change once I arrive in Peru?

Yes, schedules are tentative and subject to change. Updates will appear automatically in your digital itinerary under the Trip Information and Documents tab.

What is the STEP Program and should I register?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service from the U.S. Department of State that provides important travel updates and safety information from the local embassy. It also ensures the U.S. Embassy can contact you in case of an emergency. If you are a U.S. citizen or national, we highly recommend registering before your departure.

Where can I find emergency contact and residence details?

All important Emergency Contact, Program Residence, and Pre-Departure Information are located under the Trip Information and Documents tab of your Program Schedule portal.

Who should I contact if I have questions about my schedule?

If you have immediate questions about your Program Schedule or any other aspect of the internship, please reach out to your Program Coordinator or Mentor. Our team is available to assist you before and during your program.

Pre-Arrival Questions

Should I get an international data plan or a local SIM card?

For convenience and reliability, we recommend securing an international data plan through your current mobile provider before traveling. If you prefer, we can assist you in obtaining a local eSIM upon arrival in Peru. Please note that eSIM activation may take some time. Wi-Fi is also reliably available at all Program Accommodations.

Can I schedule a call with my parents before departure?

Yes. You may book an Informational Call using this link to go over any outstanding questions with your parents before your trip.

How much money should I bring to Peru?

We recommend budgeting about $100 per week for incidental expenses. Most interns bring U.S. dollars to exchange locally—make sure bills are newer (2009 or later) for the best rate. If you plan to use a debit or credit card, notify your bank of your travel plans in advance.

Will I need a power adapter or converter in Peru?

Most outlets at our Program Accommodations are Type A, the same as in the United States. However, Peru uses 220V electricity, and you may occasionally encounter different plug types in clinics or public spaces. A universal plug adapter is recommended for flexibility. Most Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, MacBooks) are dual-voltage and only require a plug adapter. For appliances that are not dual-voltage, such as hair dryers or curling irons, you will need to bring a voltage converter.

Do I need to upload my flight itinerary before the internship?

Yes. Please upload your flight itinerary using the provided link as soon as possible. Once received, we will complete your Program Schedule and share it with you promptly.

Am I required to order IMA-branded scrubs?

Yes. All interns must wear IMA-branded scrubs during clinical rotations and outreach activities to meet hospital regulations and maintain uniformity. Scrubs should be ordered in advance. Your scrubs will be delivered when you arrive at your placement site.

Safety & Security

Are there safes or lockers in the rooms to secure passports and valuables?

Yes. Each room is equipped with security boxes where you can safely store your passports, cash, and other important documents.

We recommend:

  • Always keeping your valuables secured in the locker when you are not using them.

  • Carrying only the cash and items you need for daily activities.

  • Keeping digital copies of important documents (such as your passport) stored securely online or on your device.
