How to Use the IMA Medical School GPA Calculator

Enter your college courses once to see your cumulative GPA and your science GPA for AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS side by side.

Written by Mark Jones

The IMA Medical School GPA Calculator is a free tool that estimates the GPAs medical school application services calculate. Each service uses different rules, so the calculator shows them next to each other.

What the Calculator Shows

  • Cumulative GPA

  • AMCAS science GPA (BCPM)

  • AACOMAS science GPA

  • TMDSAS science GPA

  • Graduate GPA and post-baccalaureate GPA

  • Total credits

  • Two charts: your GPA by year and your cumulative GPA as your credit hours add up

Step 1: Add Your Courses

Select Add Course and fill in one row for each class on your transcripts:

  • School: the college where you took the course.

  • Year: High School, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Postbac or Graduate.

  • Qtr: check this box if your school uses quarter hours. The calculator converts quarter hours to semester hours (for example, 3 quarter hours count as 2 semester hours).

  • Class, Credits and Grade: enter them exactly as they appear on your transcript.

Step 2: Mark Your Science Courses

Each row has three checkboxes: AMCAS BCPM, AACOMAS BCP and TMDSAS BCPM. Check the box for each application service that counts the course as science. The services classify courses differently, so a course can count for one and not another. See AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS GPA Calculator for each service's rules.

How Grades Are Counted

  • Letter grades use a 4.0 scale: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7 and F = 0.

  • Grades of P, W, NP and I are listed but not counted in the calculator's GPAs. A WF (withdraw failing) counts as an F.

  • The TMDSAS science GPA ignores plus and minus grades, so a B+ and a B- both count as a B.

  • Graduate courses appear only in your graduate GPA. Postbac courses count in your cumulative GPA and also appear in your postbac GPA.

Step 3: Import or Export a Spreadsheet

Select Export CSV to download your courses as a spreadsheet. Select Import CSV to load a spreadsheet with the same columns: school, year, quarter, class, credits, grade and the three science checkboxes. To build a spreadsheet from scratch, export one course first and use that file as your template.

The calculator also remembers your courses in the browser you used, so you can come back later on the same device.

Step 4: Save Your GPA Summary

Select Save My GPA Results and enter your first name, last name, email and phone number. Your GPA summary is saved to a new IMA Student Portal account, and you are taken to the Student Portal to continue.

Good to Know

  • These results are estimates. AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS calculate your official GPAs after they verify your transcripts.

  • Next, estimate your MCAT score with the MCAT Score Calculator, then enter both numbers in IMA Pathfinder.
